Renewed range of coolant fluids

24-05-2024

The importance of coolant fluid in preserving your vehicle's performance and lifespan cannot be underestimated. However, few are aware of the crucial role played by an obscure substance: 2-ethylhexanoic acid. This carboxylic acid has been a game changer in automotive cooling fluids, ensuring the engine runs smoothly under various conditions. But what is 2-ethylhexanoic acid, and how is it used in coolants?

What is 2-ethylhexanoic acid, and what is its role in coolant fluids?

2-ethylhexanoic acid, often called 2-EHA, is a fatty acid that has significantly advanced in the automotive industry. It acts as a corrosion inhibitor, preventing rust and corrosion in the engine. This is vital, especially under extreme conditions with high corrosion risk. Additionally, it provides stability at high temperatures and works well with various materials used in engines.

Reclassification

Despite its beneficial properties, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) recently carried out a significant reclassification for 2-EHA and its salts. This reclassification, which occurred in December 2023, means that products containing ≥ 0.3% 2-ethylhexanoic acid (2-EHA), such as some coolant fluids, must now be reassessed as reproductive toxic category 1B. This classification change has several implications.

Impact

One of the changes is that items with this classification can no longer be sold in consumer packaging. This means we need to make adjustments to comply with the new European legislation. This has given us the chance to review our range of coolant fluids.

As a result of these changes, some products have disappeared from our range. These have been replaced by newly introduced products, such as the Coolant SP 14+. Other products have received updates to comply with the new standards. In all cases, we have ensured that our products meet the needs of our customers and are ready for the future.

In short, our renewed coolant line complies with the new European legislation and offers the same trusted quality and performance you can rely on. As a result, our products are now completely up-to-date and ready to support your needs for the coming years.

Furthermore, Kroon-Oil remains committed to continuous improvement and innovation. We will continue to listen to our customers' needs and feedback to ensure that our products meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and environmental considerations.

To make it easier for you, we have summarised all the changes and adjustments in an organised manner so you know what to expect from our products.

We hope this blog/newsletter has helped you gain more insight into the role of 2-EHA in coolants and the impact of the recent reclassification.
